Fun Chocolate Facts.

Chocolate, that mysterious, amazing food, is the obsession of many people around the world.  Its velvety texture and rich flavor create irresistible temptations for its followers.  Beyond the candy wrappers and smudged fingers are lots of fun facts about our favorite food group.  So here are twenty-five of our favorite fun facts—you can dazzle your friends and family at your next event.

    1. Cacao beans taste bitter in their natural state. In fact, the term “chocolate” originated from an Aztec word, Xocolatl, which means “bitter water.”
    2. Ancient Aztecs thought chocolate had magical powers; like the ability to give them strength.
    3. Chocolate literally is the Food of the Gods. The cacao beans that are harvested come from a tree species with a genus name of Theobroma, which translates to “food of the gods”.
    4. In America, 71% of consumers favor milk chocolate over other variants.
    5. 50% of Americans will choose chocolate over other flavors such as vanilla.
    6. The largest chocolate bar ever manufactured was in Italy in 2000. The bar had a weight of 5,000 lbs.
    7. In the U.S., 25% of all peanuts and 40% of all almonds are used in chocolate making.
    8. The preferred ice cream topping is chocolate fudge or syrup.
    9. One 6 ounce cup of milk chocolate contains approximately 5 mg of caffeine, white chocolate has no caffeine.
    10. Chocolate syrup was used to depict blood in the iconic shower scene of Hitchcock’s film, “Psycho.”
    11. 600,000 tons is the average global consumption of cocoa beans per year.
    12. Worldwide consumers spend more than $20 billion per year on chocolate products.\
    13. An average American will eat about 10-12 pounds of chocolate per year.
    14. It takes about 400 cacao beans to create 1 pound of chocolate.
    15. An average Swiss will eat about 22 pounds of chocolate a year. The Swiss, however, have one of the lowest heartfailure rates and obesity cases in the world.
    16. Women crave chocolate more than men.
    17. 23 million Hershey kisses are approximately produced each day.
    18. The melting point of cocoa butter is just below 98.6° F. This is how chocolate so wonderfully melts in your mouth.
    19. The largest box of chocolates contained 90,090 Frango mint chocolates and weighed 2,002 pounds! It was made by Marshall Field’s of Chicago on November 14, 2002.
    20. Hershey’s is the oldest and largest chocolate company in the U.S.
    21. Cadbury is the most popular chocolate in the UK.
    22. Most cocoa comes from West Africa.
    23. Eating chocolate gives you the same feeling as falling in love.  This is probably why Valentine’s Day and chocolate go hand-in-hand.
    24. Cocoa beans go through an eight step process to become chocolate.
    25. Chocolate is harmful to dogs. It is poisonous actually. The Theobromine in chocolate is a stimulant and can be hazardous to dogs and other animals. It can cause seizures and even death.
